The spinal cord is the »data highway« – the nervous system runs from the brain through the spinal cord and is divided into two parts:
THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM AND THE PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord, whereas the peripheral nervous system transmits messages.
The peripheral nervous system further consists of the somatic system, which controls organs under voluntary control and of the autonomic system, which controls functioning of organs such as lungs, the heart, and the bowels. In total, there is 12 pair of nerves emerging from the brain and 31 emerging from the spinal cord.
